Can't find the book you want on our shelves? Is it rare or out of print? We also put books online! Check out our Amazon Store. Contact us if there is a specific book you find online and cut the shipping charges. We can drop it off for you at the store. Make the Friends Bookstore the first place you look! Both online, and in the store! We hope to see you soon!!! Kyle Cabral

Get Involved in “Livermore Reads Together”As the 2nd Annual Livermore Reads Together program takes shape, this is a great opportunity for book clubs to schedule one of the featured books as their upcoming read. For adults, the selected books are the Dune series, originally by Frank Herbert and continued by his son Brian Herbert and former Livermore resident Kevin J. Anderson. The original Dune, set on the desert planet Arrakis, is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who grows up to avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family. Described as a stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune is definitely considered a classic of the science fiction genre. The world of Dune is further explored in the other books in the series. Forming a parent-child book club would be a great way to involve the entire family in Livermore Reads Together. The 2008 Livermore Reads Together book for young readers is City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau of Modesto, California. City of Ember is the first of three books in the Books of Ember trilogy about a society set apart in order to survive. It chronicles how twelve-year-olds, Lina, the messenger and Doon, the scientist, discover why things are going wrong in their city and how to find a way out. By observation and puzzle solving Lina and Doon demonstrate great courage and daring in the face of the unknown. Programs related to both the adult and youth books will be featured throughout the month of February. The library will be posting further details about the programs on the library’s website at http://www.livermore.lib.ca.us, including discussion questions for book groups. In the meantime, stop by the library to check out one of these books today! |
